Dan Bubien & the Delta Struts ready to roll

Dan Bubien & the Delta Struts have established themselves in the Pittsburgh music scene with a reputation for dependability and excellence.

With one listen, you can just tell the blues-rock-soul band’s new album, “Thieves & Yesterdays,” is the one frontman Bubien, of Aliquippa, has been itching to make.

Confidence and purpose burst from every track, heard in each soulful vocal wail, each testifying guitar run and every thick groove achieved by Bubien and his bandmates, including fellow six-string ace Shawn Mazzei.

With a tight, seasoned rhythm section of Christian “Captain” Caputo and Mark Pollera, and guest appearances from two of the Beaver County’s finest sidemen — keyboardist Joe Munroe and harmonica player Charlie Barath — “Thieves & Yesterdays” is an album that demands attention now.

“We are very much looking forward to what 2019 has to bring,” Bubien said. “We’re excited to be releasing “Thieves & Yesterdays,” which will be available for purchase on Feb. 1.”

Count on Bubien & the Delta Struts to feature some of the new songs Wednesday, when headlining Jergel’s Rhythm Grille in Marshall Township, and again Thursday night when they open for Chicago singer-songwriter J.D. Simo at the Hard Rock Cafe at Station Square in Pittsburgh.

“It’s personally my third release since 2013 but the first with an official band alongside with me, which just made the entire process that much more meaningful to me,” Bubien said. “I also think because of that, it’s just that much better. We really tried to take our time and do everything right on this record. We really worked on our preproduction, making sure we were rehearsed and had enough time with the songs to let them really sink in, but not too much where they can start to feel stale and performances can suffer.”

The song “Shake That Thang” has a loose and live celebratory feel. “Shirley” gets funky in its bridges, then slows up for a smooth soul chorus. “Heavy Toll” carries a hard Delta blues and rock sound.

Rob O’Friel, from Pittsburgh’s 91.3-WYEP, hears Black Crowes and Allman Brothers influences, praising “Thieves & Yesterdays” for its “ragged tightness” and “crunchy, gritty, jammy” sound.

Tedeschi Trucks Band and Marcus King Band influences stand out, too.

From drum parts to ancillary percussion and the bass and guitar tones, Bubien and & Delta Struts individually and collectively thought everything out.

“We left room for the proper amount of experimentation in the studio when it came to tones and capturing the sound we wanted, and there were obviously spontaneous moments of inspiration in the studio that made the whole process feel alive and right,” Bubien said.

The foundation of drums, bass and rhythm guitars was all recorded live, “so it has real living, organic quality to it, I believe,” Bubien said, adding the album “represents our current sound and vibe pretty well.”

The official CD release show is April 6 at Mr. Smalls Funhouse in Millvale.

A week prior, they’ll kick off a tour in Nashville, playing a dozen markets including Knoxville, Tenn., and Bowling Green, Ky.

“We signed on to a three-month contract that will run through June with Spark Joy Music, who has us booked in the Midwest and Eastern region of the country with a few Southern markets. We’re really looking forward to getting out there on the road and representing Pittsburgh and presenting our music and show to different markets and parts of the country,” Bubien said. “I think our sound, the music that inspires us, the music I have written over the years and what we do, specifically resonates in the South, so we’re really interested on how it will be received.”

FlyingShoes Review by Norman John Darwen 8/11/2016

A track like ‘Dark Hearted Woman’ surprisingly (at least to those who have not heard Dan before) successfully combines singer/ guitarist/ bandleader Dan’s abilities in soul, blues-rock and blues balladry into a coherent whole. Elsewhere he turns in convincing soul music in its own right – try ‘Second Hand Man’, with its full horns, doo-wop styled backing singers, and excellent vocal, or the Otis Redding flavoured ‘I Will Take Care Of You’ for good examples – and blues-rock pure and (not so) simple with the likes of the heavy riffing ‘Vagabond’ or the strong rocking boogie of ‘Memphis Murder Blues’, with lovely controlled slide guitar outbursts, the kind of thing that still occasionally gets called “blue collar blues”. The set closes with ‘The Struggle Is Real’, a funky acoustic intro leading into a heavy rocker with a work-song base.

The talented Mr. Bubien works in a trio format throughout this album, with several guests on horns, keyboards or bass, but the sound is much fuller than that implies. Dan was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania and writes all his own songs, with six of the album’s ten tracks composed in collaboration with Pittsburgh songwriter Roman Marocco. This is his first album since 2013’s acclaimed “Empty Roads”, and it has been worth the wait – blues and soul based, but richly varied from track to track, and all are memorable.

Blues Bytes Review

Empty Roads, the new CD released by Pennsylvania singer/gutarist Dan Bubien, reminds me of those classic ’70s rock albums by artists like Little Feat, a swampy mix of blues, rock n’ roll, and funk with a heaping helping of classic soul thrown in for good measure. Bubien is a wonderfully soulful singer and his versatile guitar work is equally effective. In addition, he’s a talented songwriter, writing or co-writing (with Roman Marocco or Jonathan Vallecorsa) all 11 tracks.

It’s hard to pick a standout track because they are all so good. Songs like the title track, “Fight Club,” “To Youngstown,” “Exile Blues,” and “Love Games” all have that Southern blues/rock feel to them with traces of the Louisiana swamp sound permeating. Other tracks, such as the gorgeous “Keep Love In Mind,” the Motown-styled “Irony” and “Crazy Days” (which both recall Smokey Robinson’s Miracles days), and “Brother” offer Bubien a chance to shine on vocals. The track “Dizzy Eyes” mixes R&B with Latin rhythms with pleasing results and the closing track, “Sniper,” has a strong country feel, one of several tracks on which Bubien plays Dobro.

Produced by Grammy winner Jay Dudt, Empty Roads is a excellent sampler of American music, blending the blues with soul, R&B, funk, country, and roots music, and should appeal to music lovers of all genres. It’s one of those records that you used to slip onto the turntable back in the day when you wanted to unwind after a rough day and just take in some great music.

10:00 PM Eastern Time

So excited, Victor Wainwright returns to Music On The Couch to discuss his new album, “Family Roots”, a double album that pays tribute to those in his life who have allowed him to grow to where he is now.

One album with his dad and grandfather leading the way and the other with his touring band doing fan favorites!…

We will also talk about the lifestyle changes Victor has made recently with an eye on entertaining us all for decades to come.

The Dan Bubien joins me.  Dan has a new album out entitled “Empty Roads”, which is a submission for  the 2014 Best Self-Produced CD by the Blues Foundation.

The album is a collection of 11 originals by this singer, songwriter, guitarist from Western Pennsylvania.

Dan and I will trace his road to today and we will check out music from the album.

Deb Ryder has been soaked in the blues her entire life.  Growing up in Chicago, her dad was a singer on the scene.  When the family moved to LA, her neighbor was Bob Hite from Canned Heat and her step-dad owned the Topanga Corral which featured the likes of Canned Heat, Big Joe Turner, Etta james and more.

What an increidble ride and Deb and I will talk and I will get some stories out of her as we listen to the new album, “Might Just Get Lucky”.

Finally, another ‘Couch Kid’ returns… Sandy Carroll has a new album and it is entitled “Unnaturally Blonde”.

Of course, it is brilliant! With 8 originals and a cast of musicians that would make any snger drool, the album was, of course, produced, engineers and mixed by Jim Gaines.

Sandy and I will chat about her year and the new album.
